Status Report 2012: DATA SUBMISSION
What data formats can I submit:
- Data being contributed range from simple spreadsheets to Access databases. Todd is able to process most data types and formats, and also has tools that can automatically calculate group sums and totals (i.e., combining your 30+ diatoms species data into a single "Total Diatoms" value and also calculating "diatoms:dinoflagellate" ratios and such). If you are spending hours and hours preparing your data format, Todd may be able to help you save time and frustration.
What years or dates of data do I need to submit:
- The WGPME 2012 report will be based on data up through December of 2010. You may provide data after this date, but they will be ignored by the figures and analysis. (This means you do not need to spend time removing them.) If you only have data through 2009, for example, missing years prior to 2010 will be flagged with a missing year "dot" in the standard figures. We understand the sometimes sample processing can be delayed or lost or behind schedule.
- The target time resolution is currently monthly means. However, some data sets may be capable of additional half-month or weekly analysis. If you provide your data in full resolution (with raw dates and raw data), you will have more analysis options open to you than if you pre-calculate monthly values. The COPEPODITE software will automatically bin the data into the correct time periods for you.
- Per the WGPME data policy, any data submitted to this effort will not be distributed or shared without the contributor's permission. WGPME contributors are also invited to include their data in the WG137 (global phytoplankton working group), which has a similar data policy. This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. is the contact point for both groups.
What variables or species do I need to submit:
- WGPME is hoping to do a basin-wide comparison of multiyear change (direction and intensity) in total abundance (e.g. chlorophyll, phytoplankton, bacteria, protists, etc), functional groups (e.g. diatoms, dinoflagellates, calcifiers, picoplankton, HNA/LNA bacteria, etc), and various taxonomic units (e.g. Synechococcus spp., etc) as the data permit. In addition, we are looking for relevant ancillary data (e.g. temperature, salinity, oxygen, nutrients, etc).
- If you have species data but they are not calculated into total sums (i.e. "Total Diatoms"), Todd has software that can do this for you. In most cases, Todd can help you process your data AND can do it a lot faster than you. (Contact Todd before you start pulling your hair out!)
- Species Data: If you provide species data, additional analysis and visualizations (e.g., group plots) will be possible for your data summary.
